How LinkedIn Distributes Content

LinkedIn is different from the other platforms such as Tiktok, Instagram, Threads, Twitter and Facebook.

How it distributes our content is different to the other platforms and that comes with many pro's and con's.

It's distribution of content is network weighed more than it is content-weighed. Which means: Your content is going out to your network first, then the feed later

Whereas, on Facebook and Instagram - Your content goes out to your feed, hence why people use a lot of hashtags on those platforms to boost the reach of their content.

Which is simpler but it feels like you're less in control of how successful your content becomes.

But on LinkedIn, your network determines the success of your content. So if you're connected with people who aren't really on LinkedIn or don't enjoy using the platform that much but are in your network…

and your content goes out to them… then your content is heading for a ghost town.

As far as LinkedIn is concerned, the platform did it's job, your content get's distributed to a small portion of your 1st degree connections and if the content gains traction within the first 20 minutes, it will be distributed further.

Regardless of how good you are with words or how beautiful your visuals are.

How to fix your distribution

There are a few ways to fix your network, so LinkedIn distributes your content to the right people and at the right time.

Which is what I did. I removed 400+ connections from my network. People who weren't receptive to my outreach and weren't engaging with the content. “I know, it's harsh”

But if I'm connected with someone who isn't interested in what I sell and doesn't find any value in the content I share, I'm not making money nor is my content getting distributed to the right person.

So make sure, if you're in these industries

  • Real estate

  • Crypto

  • Digital marketing

  • Fitness

You're connected with people in the same field because if you're in real estate (for example) and your network is filled with people in fitness.

Your content won't perform well.

Someone in real estate posting content for a network of people in real estate is a recipe for a disaster.

So fixing your network before posting is beyond important for your content.

  • 50% of your network needs to be your ideal content fit.

  • 25% needs to be your ideal client persona.

  • 25% needs to be your ideal follower persona.

You can distribute this among the 200+ connections you make every week.

The reason we connect with more ideal content fits than ideal clients is because, the person who buys your premium services is rarely ever in your comment section.

You need active people on the platform carrying your the content. People who are actively going to engage with the content, and make you look like the authority figure you already are.

These are people in your niché. People who share a similar expertise with you because what does your ideal client know about your expertise, they just pay for it to solve their business problems.

Now that you've fixed your network, what type of content should you post, especially as a beginner?

What type of content to post as a beginner

You need to post quite a lot of ToFU (Top of Funnel Content)

ToFu:

  • This type of content is designed to build awareness.

  • You focus on sharing a lot of generic expertise.

  • This content attracts a new and broader audience.

You can then filter the audience down the line and see who needs your help, or use that audience to build a newsletter.

Then ease your way to MoFU (Middle of Funnel Content)

MoFU:

  • This type of content filters the audience from the ideal client.

  • You focus on sharing complex strategies, breakdowns etc.

  • This type of content doesn't perform the best but is necessary to filter.

Simple and straightforward so far?

Then lastly, your BoFU (Bottom of Funnel Content)

BoFU

  • This type of content is designed to sell and promote your products and services

  • You can promote your newsletter, share testimonials and prompt people to join your waitlist

  • This type of content is obviously sales-driven so it won't be the best-performing

This is how I structure my content:

  • Monday (Long-form educational post) MoFU

  • Tuesday (Short-form educational post) ToFU

  • Wednesday (Promote my newsletter) BoFU

  • Thursday (Share a testimonial or promote waiting list) BoFU

  • Sunday (Share a personal story about my life) ToFU

We've covered a lot for one newsletter.

Don't forget to subscribe for more exclusive content like this in your email inbox which I share every Tuesday.

See you soon…
